The Vanuatu Department of Tourism has launched nationwide standards for community-owned ecotourism, supporting local families in establishing eco-friendly bungalows and cultural tours.

In a major push to protect its pristine natural environment and empower local indigenous communities, the Vanuatu Department of Tourism has officially launched the 'National Sustainable Ecotourism Standards.' This comprehensive policy framework establishes clear guidelines, certification systems, and training programs for community-owned ecotourism enterprises, supporting local families in establishing eco-friendly guest bungalows, conservation areas, and authentic cultural tours across the archipelago.

Under the new standards, certified ecotourism operations must demonstrate strict adherence to environmental protection and resource conservation practices. This includes utilizing renewable solar energy, implementing wastewater management systems, and building bungalows using traditional, locally sourced natural materials that minimize the physical footprint on surrounding ecosystems. Furthermore, the guidelines mandate that all cultural tours and activities must be designed and led by local community members, ensuring that cultural practices are represented respectfully and the economic benefits are shared equitably.

To support local landowners in transitioning to sustainable tourism, the department is deploying mobile training teams to provide workshops in hospitality management, digital marketing, and financial planning. These teams will assist communities in securing low-interest micro-loans to fund the initial construction of eco-bungalows and the purchase of safety equipment. The department is also launching a centralized digital booking platform, connecting international travelers directly with community-owned lodges on outer islands like Tanna, Santo, and Pentecost, bypassing commercial intermediaries.

The initiative has received enthusiastic support from Vanuatu's council of chiefs, local environmental groups, and international sustainable travel organizations. Experts emphasize that community-owned ecotourism provides a vital, sustainable alternative to destructive industries like commercial logging and overfishing, allowing communities to preserve their natural heritage and traditional customs while generating stable incomes. The Department of Tourism believes that these standards will position Vanuatu as a premier global destination for authentic, high-impact sustainable travel.
